ENGL 335 - Multicultural Writers : Home

Explore the work of ENGL 335 students in showcasing the multicultural authors of the North Dakota and Minnesota

Welcome!

Welcome to our site! As a class project first begun by the students in ENGL 335: Multicultural Writers (Fall 2021), we collectively seek to compile and showcase the diversity of North Dakota and Minnesota writers and literature. Anyone with this link may contribute, and we hope that anyone--students, teachers, and the general public--will benefit from this resource.

How to use this guide:

You can browse this guide several ways:

  1. Read through the full bibliography of all titles in tabs "Bibliography A-L" and "Bibliography M-Z." These tabs contain the complete collection compiled by the class.
  2. Browse by genre in the poetry, nonfiction, children's & young adult, and adult literature tabs.
  3. Peruse the full list of authors without book titles attached in the "Author Index A-Z" tab

Definition: What counts as “multicultural” writing?

Writing by a self-identified multicultural writer, or writing that centers around a character or person with a culturally-specific and identified ethnicity or race, gender, class, LGBTQ+, refugee or citizenship status, religion, age, and the intersectionality of any of those identities, especially tied to the identity’s historical context.

Why make a list, and how might it be used?

Ever wonder how the assignments you do in the classroom matter in the outside world? For this assignment, we’re taking what we do in the classroom and sharing it publicly! More specifically, we are combating stereotypes and misinformation by showcasing the wealth of diversity that can be found in North Dakota and Minnesota literature. We will create a list of books (called a bibliography) that will be published on the NDSU website and searchable on the internet. Anyone can find the list and use it to read more diverse ND/MN authors, select books for their classrooms, and even submit more books to add to the list.

What counts as “North Dakota” and “Minnesota” writing?

Titles included in this annotated bibliography are written by North Dakota or Minnesota authors. This could refer to authors who were born or raised in these states, currently reside in these states, or otherwise call these states home. Titles also include books written about or set in North Dakota or Minnesota.
